The Franciscan Sisters of Chicago opened up their 21st General Chapter the first week of June.
Please read daily General Chapter updates below written by Sister Danielle Jacob.

Thursday, June 7, 2018

The delegates began the final day of Chapter with prayer, celebrating God's enduring mercy. During the prayer, all received a special anointing calling to mind the words of Esther: "Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created." (Esther 4:14)

Our Commitment to the Future

The Chapter is grateful to the Writing Committee (Srs. Diane Marie, Emilie Marie and Jeanne Marie) for their work in preparing the statement of Our Commitment to the Future. After time for reflection and discussion, the delegates unanimously accepted the statement as offered by the committee.

Closing

S. Bernadette thanked all who had participated in Chapter and those who had served in various capacities throughout the days of Chapter. All joined together in a celebratory luncheon to close the Chapter.

The delegates began the third day of Chapter with prayer, during which all recalled their baptismal call. In a special way, they focused on the story of the woman at the well. Following the renewal of baptismal promises, all signed themselves with water, recalling Jesus who is the living water.

Critical Conversation

In the morning, the delegates looked at how they might continue to be faithful in their personal and communal lives:

  • Prayers, personal and communal
  • Community/Care for each other
  • Presence of the Divine in the World (Mission)

Governance and Leadership

When the delegates reconvened in the afternoon, they engaged in critical conversations about governance and leadership planning for the future of the congregation.

Everyone has been working very hard and it looks like the Chapter will finish on Thursday!

Tuesday, June 6, 2018

The second day of Chapter was busy for the sisters. The day began with a beautiful prayer, rich in words, music and symbolism, all calling upon the Holy Spirit for guidance and direction for this important day.

Support Personnel

No Chapter can function without the support of a variety of individuals to manage basic roles during Chapter. To that end, the following sisters were approved by the Chapter:

  • S. Emilie Marie Lesniak - Chapter secretary
  • S. Danielle Jacob, CSFN - Recording Secretary
  • S. Catherine Schneider, OSF - Facilitator
  • Srs. Diane Marie Collins & Jean Therese Jarosz - Tellers

Leadership Team Report

The Leadership Team presented an extensive report on the state of the congregation. It focused on numerous areas related to the life and ministry of the sisters.

Election of Leadership

The election results will be released after approval from Rome (currently pending).

Constitution and Directory Changes

The delegates also voted on a number of changes to the Directory and Constitutions.

Monday, June, 4, 2018

The first day of Chapter opened with liturgy, after which the leadership and supervisory management of Franciscan Village presented a special Palm Cross to the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago. The residents, employees and leadership of Franciscan Village had prayed with the cross for the intention of the sisters over the weeks prior to the Chapter.

Welcome

When the sisters gathered in Marian Hall, Sister Bernadette Bajuscik welcomed all present to the 21st General Chapter of the congregation and thanked the delegates for their presence during this sacred time in the history of the congregation. She also informed the Chapter that Sr. Joseph Marie resigned as a Chapter delegate.

Retreat

Sr. Bernadette introduced Sr. Janice Keenan, OSF, who would guide the sisters in the Chapter retreat. Sr. Janice is a Spiritual Director and the Program Manager at The Portiuncula in Frankfort, IL.

The sisters spent the day reflecting on the faithfulness of God in their personal lives and in the life of the community.

Opening Ritual

During a special opening ritual, all of the delegates were called forward to sign the Delegate Plaque.

After the calling forth of the Delegates, each received a special palm cross and was reminded, "We celebrate our faithfulness in the Cross of Christ." Each Delegate also took a cross to another sister present in the Chapter room, presenting it to her with the same words.
